Vacuum Oil Quench Heat Treatment

During vacuum oil quench heat treatment, material is heated to the suitable temperature for hardening, then cooled rapidly by immersing the hot part in quench oil to transform the material to a fully hardened structure. Parts which are quenched are then tempered (and sometimes stress relieved) to achieve the proper toughness, final hardness and dimensional stability.

Vacuum Gas Quench Heat Treatment (To 10-Bar)

Exactatherm is pleased to provide our customers with the highest quality vacuum heat treating service available. Through precise temperature and atmosphere controls, customer specifications can be met with minimal distortion and bright, scale-free results. Vacuum heat treating consists of thermally treating metals in heated enclosures that are evacuated to partial pressures compatible with the specific metals and processes. Vacuum is substituted for the more commonly used protective gas atmosphere during part or all of the heat treatment. The vacuum system ensures that parts processed through heat treating cycles are not contaminated by high temperature reactions and remain free of oxidation and discoloration.

Ion Nitriding

Ion Nitriding (Plasma Nitriding) in pulse glowing discharge is an efficient method to increase hardness and wear resistance of metals and alloys without brittleness, galling or spalling. This eliminates costly cleaning or grinding to remove the brittle white later associated with traditional nitriding. The basic technological advantage of this method is the low temperature at which the process is conducted (800-1075°F), resulting in very small dimensional deformations and distortions.  Cutting edges also remain sharp during ionitriding and the uniform glow seam attracted to all surfaces achieves consistant hardness and case depth.

Stress Relieving

Machining or welding induces stresses in parts. The bigger and more complex the part, the more the stresses. These stresses can cause distortions in the part long term. If the parts are clamped in service, then cracking could occur. Also hole locations can change causing them to go out of tolerance. For these reasons, stress relieving is often necessary.  Typically, the parts that benefit from stress relieving are large and complex weldments, castings with a lot of machining, parts with tight dimensional tolerances and machined parts that have had a lot of stock removal performed.  Stress relieving is essential for components that are to be subsequently ion nitrided or PVD coated.

Age Hardening

Describes a time-temperature-dependent change in the properties of stainless steel alloys. It is the result of precipitation from a solid solution of one or more compounds whose solubility decreases with decreasing temperature. For each alloy susceptible to aging, there is a unique range of time-temperature combinations to which it will respond.  When a precipitation hardening alloy is quenched, its alloying elements will be trapped in solution, resulting in a soft metal. Aging a “solutionized” metal will allow the alloying elements to diffuse through the microstructure and form intermetallic particles. These intermetallic particles will nucleate and fall out of solution and act as a reinforcing phase, thereby increasing the strength of the alloy.

Typical alloys are 17-4, 15-5, 13-8 MO, 17-7.

Cryogenic Treatment

Cryogenic treatment is the process of treating workpieces in liquid nitrogen.  By removing undesirable metallurgical constituents (retained austinite), many properties are improved, including wear resistance, fatigue life and long term dimensional stability.  The process has a wide range of applications from industrial tooling to improvement of musical signal transmission.

Solution Treatment

Solution treatment is a process in which an alloy is heated to a suitable temperature and held at this temperature for a sufficient length of time to allow a desired constituent to enter into solid solution, followed by rapid cooling to hold the constituent in solution.  Most solution heat treatments soften or anneal.

Industries Served: Aerospace, Automotive, Castings, Defense, Fasteners, Job Shop, Manufacturing, Medical, Power Generation, Stampings, Tool & DiE

Maximum Load Size: 1,000 LB

Dimensions: 30″ H x 30″ W x 48″ L

Vacuum Annealing

Annealing is a heat treatment process which alters the microstructure of a material to change its mechanical or electrical properties.  It is performed by heating a metal or metal alloy above its re-crystallization temperature, “soaking” for a prescribed period of time, followed by cooling.  The heating and cooling rates depend on the composition, shape and size of the part. Typically, in steels, annealing is used to reduce hardness, increase ductility and help eliminate internal stresses and refine the structure by making it homogeneous. Full annealing removes the internal stresses, which build up as a result of cold working and other fabrication processes.

Exactatherm conducts annealing services for various materials in our vacuum furnace for many different industries and with our precious furnace controls can meet a wide variety of spec requirements.
